Here’s a little artwork that could do well on the international circuit…probably fetch a fortune.

I guess you would describe it as paint and rust on metal but I’m not sure what the subject is.

It’s the top of a 44-gallon drum (hence the hole) and it’s weathering well on the Oodndatta Track in South Australia’s far north.

The artist is unknown but I can hazard a guess who it was.

Due to some changes being made to the Sentimenal Bloke website there will be no photos published for the next two or three days.

I apologise in advance but it is hoped the changes will give more prominence to the photographs.

I hope the changeover too will be seamless for everyone.

Subscribing either by email or RSS in the top right hand section of the page will also ensure you get posts automatically as they are made.

It was very hard to leave this wonderful sight and its strange currents but having to be back on the ground by last light was a necessity.

Coastal Lake Eyre is an interesting place as the basin refills.

The rising floodwaters eventually find and fill everything in their path, making interesting patterns and contrasts in the salt and desert sands.

Portrait Too https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/05/portrait-too/ Sun, 08 May 2011 10:31:00 +0000 http://pmacdonald.com.au/dev/2011/05/portrait-too/

It’s a good habit to develop when shooting landscapes, to also look at the portrait perspective too.

Back in late January I photographed this scene link to picture along a stretch of the Arkaroola Creek not far from Bolla Bollana waterhole in the Flinders Ranges.

The portrait version, I think it is a better image.

The Drover https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/05/the-drover/ https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/05/the-drover/#comments Thu, 05 May 2011 12:45:00 +0000 http://pmacdonald.com.au/dev/2011/05/the-drover/

It doesn’t happen often these days – droving cattle in the traditional way with horses.

Motorbikes replaced horses on catlle and sheep stations around Australia because of costs and efficiency.

Nevertheless on the Birdsville Track recently, at Clayton Station, the cattle drive was on once again, with some fine horsemen and women droving the herd.

Full Moon Over Warraweena https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/05/full-moon/ https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/05/full-moon/#comments Wed, 04 May 2011 12:16:00 +0000 http://pmacdonald.com.au/dev/2011/05/full-moon/

A full moon rising behind the ruins of the Sliding Rock mine on the Warraweena Conservation Park, northern Flinders Ranges.

The night before a full moon, as in this case means the moon has risen at about that same time the sun is setting so there is still plenty of available light.

It can pay to know where the moon is going to rise and have a composition worked out beforehand which was not the case here……just a fortunate opportunity.

Walking down the Parachilna Creek not far from where the creek comes out onto the plains.

Lots of little gems to be found.

Nikon and the other camera makers will have another name for A1 Servo.

The mode locks on to a subject and keep it in focus while the shutter button is held down half way, even when the subjects, like these Little Corellas are coming towards the camera.

The other half of the big panorama presentation in Arkaroola’s Greenwood Lodge project referred to an earlier post last week.

This panorama features Mt Painter on the left, Mt McKinlay in the Gammon Ranges in the far background, and the controversial uranium issue centred around Mt Gee slightly left of the tree on the right.

Running Water https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/04/running-water/ https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/04/running-water/#comments Thu, 14 Apr 2011 10:32:00 +0000 http://pmacdonald.com.au/dev/2011/04/running-water/

The previous post doesn’t show water flowing into the Bolla Bollana Waterhole.

A bit remiss when talking about the sound of flowing water.

This might rectify the situation, with the steady stream of water flowing in from the right.

This perspective, I also think, shows more of the rocky surrounds to the beautiful waterhole.

The Arkaroola Creek at Bolla Bollana waterhole…….still flowing gently after rains weeks ago.

Even though extremely rare, the sound of running water was, without a doubt, the most noticeable thing here…..adding a melodic calm to an already peaceful scene.

One of the 6 metre photos going up in the Greenwood Lodge visitor centre at Arkaroola.

This is going to lose a lot in the compression for the internet but it will give a fair idea of the broad picture.

East Mt Painter gorge in the Ridgetop area of the wilderness sanctuary with Lake Frome off in the far distance.

Work in Progress https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/04/work-in-progress/ https://petermacdonaldphoto.com.au/2011/04/work-in-progress/#comments Mon, 11 Apr 2011 08:54:00 +0000 http://pmacdonald.com.au/dev/2011/04/work-in-progress/

I’ve just completed quite a few weeks work with the installation of two, 6 metre long panormas showing some of the spectacular country that makes up the Ridgetop area on the Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary.

Each of the images was printed in four sections on a vinyl, with a peel-off backing.

Well know Flinders Ranges panorama artist, Jeff Morgan and his son Alex from Hawker agreed to put up the photographs.

Each of the panels had to match up evenly with the features of the neighbouring section as well as top and bottom…..an exacting task which took quite a few hours with a few nervous moments.

The two panoramas will be the main feature of an interpretive centre still under construction inside a redesigned Greenwood Lodge at the Arkaroola Village.

The centre will give visitors a chance to learn, at their leisure about the area beyond the village which has such significance to South Australia, as well as use a lounge area where they can sit and read from a library of of magazines and books.
