{"id":182,"date":"2010-04-13T19:57:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-13T09:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pmacdonald.com.au\/dev\/?p=182"},"modified":"2020-11-17T15:47:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-17T05:17:13","slug":"oceans-in-the-desert-pt-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/2010\/04\/oceans-in-the-desert-pt-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Oceans in the Desert Pt. 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Flooded-Plain-Coongie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2442\" title=\"Flooded Plain-Coongie\" src=\"https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Flooded-Plain-Coongie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Simpson and the Strzelecki Deserts there are giant sand dunes that mostly run north to south.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes they are high as 60 metres (200 feet).<\/p>\n<p>From the air the dunes around the Coongie Lakes look like giant veins.<\/p>\n<p>In places the flood waters are just arriving.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/MG_3919.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2444\" title=\"_MG_3919\" src=\"https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/MG_3919.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/MG_3919.jpg 640w, https:\/\/petermacdonaldphoto.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/MG_3919-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In others the waters are already filling the sands between the dunes. They&#8217;ll hatch millions of fish eggs lying dormant in the sands.<\/p>\n<p>About the best map I can find of the Coongie Lakes and Lake Eyre where the food waters are flowing is<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.environment.gov.au\/water\/publications\/environmental\/rivers\/lake-eyre\/pubs\/leb-map.pdf \">link<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The waters are running in from the Cooper Creek to the East and the Warburton Creek and Diamantina River are filling Lake Eyre from the north.<\/p>\n<p>Flying over this area over the last few days in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wrightsair.com.au\/\">Wright Air<\/a> Cessna 207 certainly was the way to see this spectacular part of Outback Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Both images taken with Canon 5D Mk 1, Canon Lens 24-70 mm f2.8L USM Zoom.
