I was thinking about Ice Ages after yesterday&#8217;s post and remembered I has a photo that&#8217;s linked to the last Ice Age &#8211; sort of.<\/p>\n<p>The Koonchera sand dune is a substantial landmark. It&#8217;s roughly half way between Birdsville and Innamincka. By any standard it&#8217;s a big dune &#8211; nearly 60 metres high in spots and many kilometres long. It is one of thousands of dunes that run north to south through the Strzelecki,Tirari, and Simpson Deserts.<\/p>\n<p>They were formed in the last Ice Age about 20,000 years ago when very powerful and continuous winds blew the sand into the waves or ridges we can see today.<\/p>\n<p>As you can tell, hardy souls visit the Koonchera but it&#8217;s not for the inexperienced.<\/p>\n<p>Google Maps <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=-25.898355,139.351645&#038;spn=4.071117,6.646729&#038;z=8\">Birdsville<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This website seems to have a life of its own.
