River Red Gums line this creek bed in the northern Flinders Ranges near a place called Mt Serle. The trees grow large and stately, their trunks always a mixture of fascinating colours, the blazing sun filtered to softness through the leafy branches.

It was the middle of summer, the temperature over 40 and the gums, forming a sort of tunnel made it seem like the coolest place around.

I went to the Hans Heysen exhibition that ran for several months in the Adelaide Art Gallery. In fact I went several times. What inspiration for studying gum trees…magnificent gums.

These may not be in the Heysen style but he was certainly the inspiration.
