This website seems to have a life of its own. I was thinking about Ice Ages after yesterday’s post and remembered I has a photo that’s linked to the last Ice Age – sort of.

The Koonchera sand dune is a substantial landmark. It’s roughly half way between Birdsville and Innamincka. By any standard it’s a big dune – nearly 60 metres high in spots and many kilometres long. It is one of thousands of dunes that run north to south through the Strzelecki,Tirari, and Simpson Deserts.

They were formed in the last Ice Age about 20,000 years ago when very powerful and continuous winds blew the sand into the waves or ridges we can see today.

As you can tell, hardy souls visit the Koonchera but it’s not for the inexperienced.
